There's possibly a bit of witchcraft involved, but basically you want a file that's under 200 kB and the dimensions should be below 200 x 200. For some reason, the forum often doesn't like gifs that are exactly 200 x 200, but like 190 x 190 should work fine.

It's been a day and a half y'all. Anxiety, uncertainty, discomfort. Then i get the text at 4pm that my dog attacked the old dog in our house. Then as I am driving home, I get the text that he ran away. It took us 3.5 hours in thunderstorms to find him 1500 feet away. He's coming home from the vet with stitches and antibiotics. And my vet bill to pay, so I need to stop sleeping and turk more. $500...

I like to use https://ezgif.com for gif avatars. You can easily resize and optimize them there to try to shrink the file size a bit.
