at 20 tho?
She just asked how adult life works. That's how I would do it. Granted, if you're younger and are just starting out, people don't tend to expect too much. But even at 20, I still tried to get stuff for people. And the great thing about being a couple is that you can also give gifts as a couple. It can cut down on awkwardness, I think, if you're not really all that familiar with certain members of your SO's family.

Ok, real talk. Last year I moved out of my parents house right before Christmas (like a month it's ok) and I got my boyfriend's sister a gift, I got her friend who is basically like my boyfriend's sister too (they've been friends since my boyfriend was 2, so) a gift... I can't remember who else. My boyfriend's actual sister got me a gift back but her friend never did. I can't remember if I got his parents' gifts. We got his nephews gifts as well. And now we have a new niece. As an adult without kids or anything, who do you get gifts for? How does adult life work? I'm used to getting gifts on Christmas, my parents never wanted us to get them gifts even when we had jobs.
I'm a bad person to give advice because I come from a large Mormon family and my husband comes from an even larger one. So a gazillion nieces and nephews and everyone expects gifts. I went from loving Christmas to hating it because of the fucking ridiculous amount of money we spent each year, often on people we aren't particularly close to. So I decided last year to buy all the kids candy and little toys in gift bags. If they don't like them, tough. :p

So what I guess I'm saying is you just have to decide what you can afford and who it's most important for you to exchange gifts with. I hate that it's become an obligation, rather than a joy to give presents. Sorry about my crotchety rant. :p

:) yeah, he is, just different time frame I think. And yes, I really like it. You might like it, it's different. Pretty to watch, lots of thrills in a way. Or maybe not thrills so much as emotional involvement, I don't know how to describe it really. I guess you'd know after the first episode I think whether you'd like it or not.

Except when you have 10+ nieces and nephews. I try to make up for my small Christmas gifts with great birthday gifts.
I would imagine that can be a bit daunting...

I also struggle because we are MUCH closer to my side of the family than my husband's. I want to spend a lot more of my sisters' kids but then I feel like a jerk. To be fair, the kids on my husband's side get a fuckload of presents already.
