It's pretty common. If they had trouble finding food for a significant period, they're going to eat as much as they can when they have the chance. I think it's pretty much impossible to break them from that, so they end up fat.
I so agree with this! I think the only benefit (for me) to posting hits is to know the time on them or issues with it.

She was a hunter and underweight. She was feral until she was 3. Took a year to domesticate her. Then she had access to yummy processed kitty foods and ballooned out. In the 6 years since she became a house cat she has taken it to a new level. I have tried to harness train her and she has absolutely no interest in exercise or going outside. The rest of my dumbasses enjoy at least some exercise going for walks around the yard.
