I didn't even think about travel considerations for the holiday
I just sat in line and got my gas, and remarked to the older lady across from me that the station (with 24 pumps) was amazingly busy today

You make it sound easy. The different color batters though, I could see that easily turning into a mud color if not careful.

No, it's easy! Make your cake mix with egg whites, no yolks so it'll stay white.

Then get 6 bowls and line them up. Pour 2/3 cup batter in each bowl. Mix a couple drops of food coloring and mix in each bowl. Then you pour half the bowl into the pan. Pour pink and let it spread itself, then pour each other color in the center of the previous one. They'll spread to the edges of the pan.
