From what I remember 1983 was a really tense time.
Wikipedia says this "In November 1983,NATO conducted a military exercise known as "Able Archer 83". The realistic simulation of a nuclear attack by NATO forces caused considerable alarm in the USSR, and is regarded by many historians to be the closest the world came to nuclear war since the Cuban missile crisis in 1962."
But it carried on through the early 80s. The fear of a nuclear attack and a nuclear winter was something I remember vividly as a background to my early teens. I think it eased when Gorbachev took power and lowered again in 1989 with the fall of trhe Berlin wall and the crumbling of the Iron Curtain.

Thanks....I remember bits but I think fortunately I was still too busy playing with GI Joes and Matchbox cars to really know what might happen. Not having the cray cray media of today probably helped too lol.

Anyone have any suggestions for pizza cheese? I thought it was mozzarella but this is ridiculously stretchy and all the cheese comes off with the first bite.

Think it had more to do with President Reagan, he took a hard line with the USSR and built up the military and brought us back up to a 600 ship fleet in the Navy, so it made the russians nervous. I had just joined the Navy in 1983 and I still remember him getting on television and calling them the evil empire.

Even as a kid, I knew the futility of hiding under my desk should the Russians nuke us.

best just to be comfortably numb or run like hell because it's either us or them and when you look at it you realize it's all about money and we are just another brick in the wall, but we have to step back and breathe and take our time to tell our mother that we wish you were here, then sit and have a cigar because one of these days we will be welcome to the machine and it will be goodbye blue sky as we head to the great gig in the sky...

I actually think it was more pronounced in the UK than the US as we were considered a closer and easier target. I was only 11 in 1983. That might be the age I started becoming aware of news and events outside my everyday experience. I remember the news was always carrying stories about violent demonstations by CND outside Greenham Common which had US cruise missiles based there.
