More likely your card got skimmed by a fake card scanner somewhere. They then test it at gas stations to see if it's a working number.

Had mine stolen by using a 7-11 pay at the pump in Orlando a few years ago. I knew it had to be there because it was the only place I used that card there. someone tried to use the copied one for 8bucks at a McDonalds but got turned down lol. Got an alert almost immediately.

This is why me and my husband have separate debit cards. He's worried with all my crazy online shopping from China, I might get my account hacked. He doesn't even use his card online.

They put it on a blank card's magnetic strip and swipe it, far as I know. Harder now with chipped cards though I think.

I didn't even get a fraud text! I found out by opening my bank account and noticing I wasn't a baller anymore.
