I am close to deleting my facebook because it is a toxic shithole of people who act like they have never lived in a house with functional plumbing acting condescending toward everyone else. That particular social media platform has long since outlived its usefulness to society.

FB is designed around psychological mechanisms of comparing your life to others. It's actually addictive but instead of a "high" you get anxiety with every hit. I use the messenger feature to keep in touch with a few people but otherwise don't look at it.

Twitter is the same thing except instead of comparing your life to others the "high" is getting short, meaningless responses from others, particularly in the form of insults or praise.

I know these came about because of people just experimenting until they hit upon something that was popular, but it would be hard to design a better system to make money off of creating depression and anger.

The funny thing is that mTurk is kind of similar, but the "high" is pennies instead.

All that being said I'm not sure I could design a social media platform that isn't toxic.

Usertesting? I signed up with them before, but whenever they send me emails and I clicked on them, the jobs were either taken or I didn't qualify. Are they that good? How do you do it?
