He wiped out half of the universe's population with that gauntlet in the end of the last movie. It gives him basically the power of a god. Each little gem in it controls an "elemental part of the universe" or something. Like, one for time, one for reality, power, mind, space and soul. They're called infinity gems. That's as much as I know, from the movies. I'm sure comic fans know way more, and care way more, I'm guessing.
