Oh, mine absolutely learned skills even in his time off. They were ag/cattle related, so don't seem important to most of the population, but they're necessary and he worked his ass off. He still studied on his own, and even with time off, scholarshiped his way into the small private school he had his eye on (for the certain program/classes) but work and the service industry is still vital for everyone. I took a gap year too. Unfortunately, it was my second year of college and I ended up finishing up in five. But hey, I am finishing up my PhD now and I actually have a few profs still alive that I can call and say I told you so
