Surviving the Blue Norther by J. B. Cearley Weather wisdom

As we jogged home, my two brothers and I felt like we were tromping about on the North Pole. Never had we been so cold. Our clothing was not adequate for such a cold, windy, snowy afternoon. Our hands and ears were nearly frostbitten when we arrived home.
We donned our work clothes and did the milking. Dad gave all the stock extra hay because of the cold. He took the old ax and chopped the block of ice on the stock water trough. They all shoved toward the icy water, trying to get a drink.
Our old house was so cold that Dad had us bring in some pine lumber scraps we had cut up to start the fires in the small stove we used to heat the living room. The fire had died down while we were outside. We had some mesquite shrubs and a sack of coal for fuel.
We used too much of the pine to start the fire. The blaze began roaring and got so hot the the stove turned red from the heat. Dad cut the damper on the stovepipe, afraid the house might catch fire. We finally got the stove regulated so that it was throwing off good heat. After supper, we sat humped up around the stove, listenting to the old Belmot radio. We drapped quilts over our legs because the wind was whistling through every crack in the old rented house. to be continued ...

We actually went out to get some two weeks ago. It was AWFUL. My daughter was so disappointed. I couldn't believe how bad it was. The nice woman was selling from a truck - I almost want to go back and say (nicely, helpfully - she's really trying to build a business)
you sold us water with noodles, sans salt.

I know this is a work thread- But. not much work out there!

I have to sub so much because there isn't that much here. I couldn't get lemon grass, for instance - and I hate sweet potatoes (really despise them), couldn't find organic shallots (why not? I live in the country. sigh).

Anyway, that's the end of my recipe . And that's the Moosewood version. Mine is in the crockpot simmering rn.
