You usually get some money back if you fill out a FAFSA. The average for me was 1k when I was attending a technical college.

Only if you take out loans. A Federal Pell Grant is different; you get a set amount of funds towards your schooling, and can pocket the rest w/o having to pay it back. It's an option for low income students.
