i don't know the full situation because i haven't seen them in a few weeks and i'd rather have the in depth talks in person, but from what i know i think he got on disability and maybe isn't able to work anymore? he's been sick for awhile but the diagnosis is new. and he had really great health insurance through his job, but if he's not working anymore well :/ I think it's supposed to last for a few months but after that...

They can't fire him because it falls under fmla then disability. I know because I worked in medicine and recently was fired (for whistleblowing) but while I was on fmla. Both are illegal but lately employers have been pushing the law. If they terminated him while he's sick like this...get him an employment lawyer.
