On a much different topic, my grandparents house burned down today. Now that's sad and all, but it's made me realize something. I didn't really feel sorry for them. I have always had a bland feeling towards things most people would be heavily upset over, such as that incident or a death of a family member etc. Am I a complete pos that feels nothing, or are other people similar?
Did they make it out safely and do they have insurance? If so, things are things and can be replaced. Different people cope with "heavy shit" differently. No one can say yours is "wrong" or makes you a piece of shit. I was never profoundly affected by a death until my dad died.
I'm all about equality, just so it's clear, guys. I genuinely feel like crap if that's how my comment came across.
We were all going there. I didn't think you came across badly, but I understood why aveline @aveline was nixing the discussion.

Yeah, everyone is fine including the dogs and they have insurance. It's just, I see my mother get so tore up over things like that and then I'm just 'eh' about it. Yeah, we were close since I practically grew up with them, but I still didn't react the same as anyone else.

Seriously, don't worry about it. I think you're fine. As long as you can empathize with others then you're good. People really do process things differently. If people could have seen my sister and I after my dad died, they'd have thought we were horrible people. We coped with large amounts of alcohol and laughter. Tears came later, but the laughter never stopped. That's our coping mechanism.

Depression? A lot of bad experiences in life in general. Could have dulled the edges a little, maybe. I'm sure your mom is probably thinking of the memories, maybe pictures and stuff like that, the most. Maybe you just don't make a big deal because a lot of what they lost was only material possessions?

My grandparents had a house fire, caused by an electric blanket. I was a teenager at the time, I went to Walmart with my grandpa when he tried to return the burned up electric blanket that caused the fire. The most notable thing I remember about the incident is how humorous it was to watch my 70 year old grandpa try to negotiate about the stupid blanket. My grandparents came out very well after the insurance settlement. I don't know that that makes you a bad person. Just observant, and perhaps inured to the ways and means of society. Shit stinks.

He did get a refund on that blanket by the way.

I know! But, I'll keep them, even if they pee on the toilet seats (or floor) sometimes. At least I won't be spending a fortune on tampons.
Lol, what's the most puzzling thing about the men for you? My guy will leave trash on the kitchen counter, literally inches above the trash can. I don't understand it, but then again, it's just right above the trash can, so I can dispose of the stuff the next day. No effort for me, so why doesn't he just throw it away?

That. Empty containers put back into the fridge. Never putting lids back on anything. ever. Fart jokes. Dick jokes. Ok, I kinda get the last one.

My parents house burned to the ground, too. My adult sister was living there at the time. Her reaction was, "you never know how much you miss until you lose all your makeup." They got out of the house with the PJ's they were sleeping in. My BF and I were in a hotel while he was remodeling it, and the fire alarm was going off incessantly. We were on the 9th floor. I always thought, "wallet, keys, phone." That was the hardest thing about my parents house burning down. No way to call anyone, no way to pay for anything, no car to drive.
