You have to mark answers on the "attention checks' THey're broken, and I just chose the neutral option and emailed the requester.

If it is a research study under an IRB than almost always they will toss the data. By stopping at any time you are essentially withdrawing consent. It is also bad science practice to accept partial data. But for consumer products research they could keep it if they wanted. In terms of them saying it damaged their data set, its probably because they have poorly constructed database that assumes all data is complete, but could also be an idle threat.

they might impute some of the missing data - if it's near the end...........or throw out a subscale if they can fiddle enough with the rest of the data............(I've seen it done before..............)
