I couldn't submit the 5$ hit from John Campbell because mturk required a new sign-in and I had to refresh the page so it said I already submitted this hit but it wasn't submitted. I am so angry.

i'm mostly annoyed that it posted both too late to clear out the batch before the day change so that i could finish maxing on a9s, and too early to finish maxing on barcodes or a9s before the day change

Are you sure it didn't submit? That message usually doesn't pop up unless you did submit it. Might be out of order on your dashboard depending on when you accepted it.
