yep, I've had bulldogs my whole life. and each were taken care of as if they were my children and/or best friends and I miss each one everyday. though this new golden retriever has stolen my heart as well
Losing pets really sucks. The hardest time for me was just last year when our cat died (I had to put her down unexpectedly) and I had her cremated. When we brought her box home my son asked if she could sleep with us just one more night, as she always slept with us (or one of us). Damn I lost it helping my kid with his grief. (makes me tear up right now just thinking about it)

And yep, I just deal with it. Ain't got a choice, really. Having my youngest son really helps...saved my life and gave me reason to stay happy. I do love that kid of mine, even when he's driving me insane. I just remind myself I'd give my left arm to have his sister being a butthead, too
I remember that George Carlin joke. I get myself worked up sometimes thinking about how my cats will die so much sooner than I will. I try not to think about it. I'm sorry you had to go through that.

That bothers me too. Maybe I shouldn't say this on the internet, but I dognapped a baby in my neighborhood a couple of years ago because he was (I felt) not being taken care of properly. I couldn't keep him myself because my dog gets along with no one except for cats (??), who knows. Anyway, I found a lovely home for "Roscoe", he's gained a lot of weight and gets to run in the country these days.

There's nothing good about a loss like that, but I've seen how you really appreciate every moment and take time out just for spending with him...I think a lot of people take that kinda stuff for granted
