I've seen this making your own 'yarn' using old t-shirts in strips, etc, but this stuff looks awesome.

Roving is the step halfway between sheep and thin yarn. You can buy it at some upscale yarn shops or online, but you'd need a huge amount for that blanket. Do you want me to find a pattern online?
