Does nothing to your approval rating. There is a stat that tracks abandoned hits but I've maybe seen one requester ever use it. I probably let 5-10 hits expire every day.

If you let a hit expire or return it doesn't count against you, but it does count against the cap of 3800 daily hits you're allowed to do, which in most cases is not a problem.
The only one that matter are Google requesters because if you return those, you'll get locked out from doing any more hits from other Google requesters for a set of time.

I sometimes try to do them but then I don't. because they're 5's. I think they require a special skill like reading fast.
