So. I have a somewhat industrial fan. By that, I mean that I bought it at Home Depot, and it's the kind of fan you would see in a warehouse if you ever worked in a warehouse (I did, in Vegas, where they had no means of cooling and deserved a traitor's death). Even on the lowest setting it blew with surprisingly force. That was about three years ago.
I thought that it wasn't seeming to blow as hard because I was used to it. Then I noticed the collected dust, dirt, and assorted debris collected along the edge of the blades which was then promptly removed. Blows three times as hard now, and I was not ready for it. Had it on me last night and now I've woken up with a chill and a sore back, of all things.
So...yeah.
It's easy to forget to clean your fans. in my bedroom, it's on if I'm present. If I'm going to be downstairs, or leaving, the fan is off. but if I'm in the room, the fan is on. I clean the blades every 2-3 weeks, and this is a standard fan, not a 2.5 ft monster like you have.
After you dust the blades, try using some pledge on the blades, and then let it dry. and instead of aiming at you, have it aim at a wall somewhat nearby you, and aimed in such a direction that it will cause a cycle/circle around the room.
and if you don't move much while you sleep, try doing what I have gotten my daughter to do recently; don't sleep under the covers. she's got a regular blanket on top of a sheet, but I told her to lay in the middle of the bed, and then folded the blanket in from the sides - lifted the side edges to bring them to the center, over her, sleeping bag style.
the blankets cover her legs and arms, and keep her extremeties warm, but allows the core of her body to accept some of the night air, since its already the warmest part of the body anyway.
