I completely agree. Especially with cashiers, many people in those positions have no desire at all to be anything other than cashiers. And with big companies like Walmart or Home Depot (I worked for both), they'll have no problem keeping people in those positions if those people don't speak up. But if you speak up, they can generally be very accommodating, since positions in those big stores are always opening up.

well I have an office job, and I really don't deal with outside people to much, but before I got promoted I used to work in billing where I also had to answer many phone calls from irate people wondering why their bills haven't been paid. I really hate phone work, I would much rather deal with people in person. This will be my first retail job.

I was a cashier, then moved to returns/the service desk. I only worked there for like a year, though.

Just remember, when times are tough and you think that maybe you can't handle it or you have the wrong decision, that the alternative is coming back to this place. That should really motivate you.

how did you like it?

At the time it opened my eyes to working since I didn't have a lot of work experience beforehand. I've always been a quiet-ish person so talking to people all day was a scary change at first. The whole working retail thing is a different kind of beast though. I think some people thrive in it more than others. Customers can be rude but I guess that's the nature of retail
