I think there might have been a misunderstanding with some of y'all and the post from earlier. Which was actually clarified in the forum feedback thread. (which I"m trying to find the link at the moment)

No one has said that there is now 100% turk only thread and 100% chat only thread. We're just asking you to be mindful of how long your (again global you, not you specifically) chat goes on. If everyone chatting were to just throw a random hit at the end of their post, it would be exactly the same as before. I hope that cleared it up for you but if it didn't message me, message another mod, post in the feedback thread, whatever makes you (global you) comfortable.
To add on, if you look at the work thread post counts over the last two weeks, you can see where we think things started getting bad. Work threads with 2400+ posts are a huge mess and we really don't want them to become the norm. Even with 2k post threads, I think we start pushing the limits of this single thread system that the mturk community seems so fond of.

We're not asking that people cut out all off-topic discussion in the work threads. We just want things to go back to how they were two weeks ago, rather than how they've been in the last week. The post I made earlier was not an announcement of a rule change or anything. It was just a suggestion to hopefully help the situation before it gets any worse.

Yes. electrolyte @electrolyte 's reply to me helped clear it up for me

http://www.mturkcrowd.com/threads/forum-guidelines-and-moderation-discussion-thread.189/page-2

We can still chit chat a little, just not to extremes

At least that is my interpretation of it
This is accurate.

No one said no chat all here ever. But if your chat is off topic and it's going on for pages and pages, please be mindful of those trying to work and find work-related content here, and move your off topic conversation over to the chat thread, IRC, PM, etc.

And if anyone notices this happening, please do speak up and remind others to do this. You don't have to wait for a mod to say it. In fact, please don't wait around for a mod to say it because we're often busy. Or, if you're not comfortable saying it, PM a mod so we can be alerted.

I think the problem is that there ISN'T a rule.

I have 15 pieces of flair. Do you WANT me to wear 35? That's what this feels like.

I'm trying to stay active and a positive part of the community without annoying the admins and mods. It's a fine line at this point.

Or use the Report option? Right? I have had a lot of luck with that. Even when I don't see mods around, if I report it, they intervene quickly

I'm willing to bet it was because of Masters being given out on 5/22. That's where the pages started taking off. Before it was rather hush-hush about Masters HITs and also about Masters vs. Non-Masters but now that it's the first time that's been given in 17 months, it's still a fresh topic. Granted, some of that is still shitposting, but I'm willing to place a small amount of blame on that.

The "rule" is to keep off topic chat to a moderate medium and if it's going on for awhile, move it elsewhere.

Or use the Report option? Right? I have had a lot of luck with that. Even when I don't see mods around, if I report it, they intervene quickly
Yes, the report button notifies us all at the same time, and whoever is available can come hop into the thread and say something, if needed.

I (and probably others) have a pagemonitor alert set up for the reports section. As soon as someone reports something I get a ding, even if I'm not actually paying attention to the forum.

I agree. I think this should've been clarified with the first post. Not a knock, but I think people got scared away without clarification.

You guys do an awesome job and run a great forum, but you can't group the number of posts into a tell all thing about the thread. At night, mturk dies down, so people still post HITs every now and then, but mostly it's discussion over IRL stuff.

I think if anything got out of control during the day, no one would be afraid to speak up and say something, which I've often seen.

If you want to get more specific about "rules", there are parts of our guidelines that address this that have been there since day one:

- Help us continue to build and grow our forum by contributing to discussions, adding your own content, and asking well-thought out questions, even if you’re just starting out
- Help us influence the future of this community by choosing to engage in conversations that make this forum an interesting and helpful place to be — and avoiding those that do not.
