Newb question about speaking English.
English is not my native tongue and I don't speak it at home. But I'm 100% bilingual and got both my BA and MBA here, and I speak English at work. If a survey asks me if English is my native / first language, I feel like I want to be honest, and say no, but also that it belittles my skill level, which is equivalent to native speakers.
Any advice? Thanks!!
Be honest.

if english was not the language you used from birth then you are not a native english speaker. at least that is what i understand the term to mean.

i would err on the side of being honest. requesters ask that for a reason because you may not understand cultural idioms, nuances of the language, etc. that native speakers would

You're still not a native speaker though and it still wouldn't be your first language.

Still, the clear answer to the question would be no - you're not going to find many people here that will say it's OK to lie :(

Please be truthful. I know that means you might be screened out but some of these surveys are region specific to english countries. Giving answers from Mumbai means you speak Hindi, and you should answer honestly. Just my opinion. Good luck! :)

Ok, yeah I actually started speaking it a little after my first birthday, but then I used less of it growing up, so I guess I agree I should accept that NOT native is more accurate. Disappointing, but oh well.

Well look at this this way - at the very worst you might not qualify for a survey. But really in probably 95% of the cases it just means another differing piece of aggregated data for the researchers to throw on a thumb drive and toss into a drawer right next to their box of granola bars. You're not exactly applying for a job here, so you may as well be honest.

That right there is a cultural difference. And would mean that if you answered yes, you'd be lying.
