The VA seems to be light years ahead of some other places.

In some ways it is. Overall, excellent care. And they "partner" with Kaiser a lot. It was pretty much the VA that introduced electronic-record/patient tracking, and if you have a heart ailment, they provide the best care in the nation. They rank higher than most "private" hospitals in patient care. But to a significant degree their phone customer service ... well, that has a lot to be desired.
