Yeah, I had savings too by the time I got to college. I never said it was "my business" what they had, and me calling them "the liars" was tongue in cheek, my point was, they made me feel like we were close to losing everything all the time...which is very unsettling for a kid.I grew up living with my grandparents, because my mom was schizophrenic and in and out of treatment. I had the same experiences like yours, but I don't think it was intentional on the part of my grandparents. I think it's more of a generational thing. Gramps was a mechanic, Grndma was a nurse. My childhood was very comfortable, but it was often suggested to me by my caretakers that I should learn how to do things for myself as well. I didn't get much without working for it. Whatever they claimed to have, I never really considered my business. Whatever I earned for myself was another matter, and much appreciated back then as it is now. My first job was at a WalMart (a franchise that I dislike now, but when Mr. Walton owned it, I feel that it was different) that opened in our small town while I was still in high school. I was somewhat embarrassed to work there, as everyone in my high school saw me wearing that uniform, but I wanted my own money, not my grandparents money. Every paycheck made me feel a little better. When I finally got to college, I had savings.

You could make yourself a little extra money by teaching a class on this for parents! "Easy tips on how to raise a financially savvy kid" or some such name.Yeah, I had savings too by the time I got to college. I will say this: My sister and I did not grow up in the same house. Without getting too personal, and explaining the "why" of it is not important. What is important is that I was taught all kinds of stuff, she was not. The way that we view money now is so different it's unbelievable. Before her husband went in to the hospital, they were doing decently, but she had no clue how to manage her money. None. I have made less than her family for a very long time, but I am the one who always has extra. May not be a lot, but I do. And even though she grew up poor and I actually didn't, I have learned how to make a dollar stretch a lot farther than she has. It's why I wish that all parents would teach their kids about money before they get out in to the real world.

You know what parents say? "You don't know anything until you've had a child." Even my sis. Um...I don't think I need to actually have a kid to teach a kid how to manage money...but ok.You could make yourself a little extra money by teaching a class on this for parents! You have some really solid advice.
Was it Benjamin Franklin or the Bible that said/says, patience is a virtue? It also prevents stomach upset, and allows us to concentrate on other HITs while we wait for money we already know we're going to get.Get your shit together, patrick. Still waiting on that reversed rejection.
Really? Wow. Money management and parenting skills, while they overlap, are pretty much a different set of skills. You know what parents say? "You don't know anything until you've had a child." Even my sis. Um...I don't think I need to actually have a kid to teach a kid how to manage money...but ok.
