It never occurred to me not to carry them with me until she said it wasn't a good idea. I just figured they were safe with me. But now that I've actually put thought into it, I can see why it's a good idea to have them not with me. I just don't know where to put them so I put them in a yellow envelope that says DO NOT THROW AWAY STUPID.

You could get a small lock box. They're not expensive (you can buy one at places like Walmart, etc.).

I do qualify as a sadist by many modern definitions. I make up for that by having decent math skills and a refined ability to estimate things, though.
I only recently started being a somewhat functional adult. These are the only important papers I have except for a handful of cards and letters in the plastic drawer thingy under my desk. (In a yellow envelope)

Lock box suggestion is a good idea... a fire box is better. Still pretty cheap... but even if you burn your house down trying to roast marshmallows in the dark of the night you'll still be able to recover your birth certificate.
