I don't think there is one rule for mturk (except the survey stuff - that just cycles with the academic calendar). IMO,most people get by during the summer (stuff appears).

The only real mturk rule of success is to - ABQ (always be qual'ing) so you are ready when a batch appears

do a little of most things. For most quals - you don't know what will turn into a qual - until it does. So, check out a few hits and test the waters on a batch.
You can search for qual hits, as well - and can follow the forum when they are posted (a few are). Also, requesters will show up here and talk up their own qual hit.
Finally, it's not unheard of to email a requester directly and beg
(I mean apply) for a closed qual. It usually doesn't work. But, sometimes it does
