good news, it's not raining

bad news? It's going to rain Thurs, Fri, Sat, Sun :(

eta: spoke too soon? They are releasing water from dams upstream. So, we're still at some risk (as a town). I'll be okay. My house won't flood. But. Sigh. I feel like I brought Florida weather up north!

darn, forgot to build that pipeline. i could pipe you a week of at-or-near 100 deg weather and you can return some water.

my great uncle across the creek called that morning to see if we were okay. he told me this happens about every 50 years on cycle. guess we're overdue. took the chickens. mom didn't replace them. dad got everyone up around 1;30 to get the cows up from pasture. he was sure he'd lost a newborn calf. the creek ran thru the pasture. mom cow brought the baby up with her. he was amazed to say the least. we don't know to this day how mama kept baby safe. the basement was filled almost to the top with water. took weeks to clean up the mess. there was a group of men from canton who had a camp there for every summer. we thought they'd left. by early afternoon, we saw the tops of their cars. my great uncle got through and found them okay. hung from the raftors during the night with a bottle of whiskey between them.
it was a rough time back then, even here in the north. i got a valuable lesson that year. but my mom had spent a long time before teaching me anyway. dad's childhood friend and some friends of his that some might at that time call "improper" spent the holiday with us. not common folks out here in the country. my mom didn't care. she welcomed everyone, didn't turn folks away unless they were trouble making inlaws. she might turn them away. dad's friend and the friends with him made it home about 30 miles away that night before their underpass closed. the next day the lady demanded they find another way down to our farm with food and water. They couldn't call us and she feared we needed supplies. it was a good reunion. for the "happy" fellows across the creek? don't know how we did it as the bridge was damaged. but we took the grill, meat from the freezer as we still had electricity and headed across that creek and celebrated "life". another holiday.

stay safe, Jan. sometimes things can be unkind. that's when we need to stick together and help each other.

In the city your neighbors are the enemy. In the country, your neighbors keep you alive.
