Actually, during World War I, it was not unusual at Christmas for a truce to be called, at which point the soldiers from each respective side (the Germans and the Allies) left their trenches to meet in the middle, shake hands, wish each other well during the holiday, share a cigarette or two, lament not being able to be with their families instead of in France fighting a war, then would return to their respective trench lines to take up the war again. ... Such were the good old days.
