So any computer geeks here?

I have a question. Found a computer by a dumpster (with nice logitech keyboard and a nice LCD monitor).

The motherboard is a dual core processor and the hard drive in it is tiny (80GB) running windows XP.

Here is the thing... I am currently using a quad core processor and more ram in my desktop. Both computers run the same ram. I was wondering if I would notice any difference if I swapped my hard drive into this computer and used it and the ram I have in there. Is there much of a difference going from quad core to dual core? I don't really game much, mostly turk on this thing.

Thanks for any advice you guys and gals can give!

Without knowing exact details, it sounds like you would be downgrading and I'm not sure why you would want to?

Yeah, I'm not quite clear on what the end goal is here. Do you plan to sell the quad core processor after doing this?

No, not planning to sell it. I was looking to keep it as a backup.

The biggest plus from one to the other is that the dual core has both SATA and IDE hard drive connectors on the motherboard. I have a couple old IDE drives that I would love to add for extra storage laying around.

I just didn't know if for basic web browsing and leaving 25 tabs in chrome open and all the scripts we run if it would have affected it at all.

Far as I know Windows 10 makes decent use of quad core if you have multiple programs open, but in terms of just running a browser no you probably won't notice much difference, especially with the same amount of RAM.

With that said, keep in mind that general operating system load IS divided pretty evenly between all cores, so the duo core is overall going to be a fair bit slower than the quad core in terms of loading programs and such. You might be better off getting some cheap SATA to IDE card and loading the drives in your current system

If it works, you could probably plug those drives into it and use it as a second computer. But I wouldn't take anything out of your current computer to put in there. If it's much older than your current one, the cpu and memory and stuff might not be compatible. Your hard drives would probably transfer okay, though you would still have to start over with a new Windows installation, I think, because of the new motherboard. I'm sure someone will tell me I'm wrong about something I said, but yeah. I still wouldn't take any parts out of your current computer to put in there, unless your current motherboard or cpu dies or something.

I had a bf that found a laptop sitting on top of a trash can, left out by the street on trash day. It was a really good one, too. It had so much spammy adware installed on it that we figured they must have thought it couldn't be fixed, so they threw it out. He just wiped the hard drive and installed a fresh copy of windows and it worked great.

I guess finding working computers in the trash is a thing? I almost feel like I should start going outside more.
