Can worn out brake pads cause the brake fluid to appear low and thus make the brake fluid light come on?

Yes. As brakes wear down they become thinner. This means that the hydraulic ram that pushes them has to push further to make contact. To do this, it will need to pump more brake fluid through the master cylinder to get the extra distance. Since it is now in the lines/brake shoe, it no longer is in the reservoir
and will read low. Running in this fashion for extended periods of time will first ruin your brake shoe or drum, then the master cylinder, then the brake pump.

Thank you! Hopefully it is just a pad issue since I only have to pay for the pads to get that issue fixed. I should have just had my dad switch them out a few months back instead of trying to save myself 40 bucks.
