Basically you are betting on the entire stock market thriving and that the stock market will never fully crash.
If it does, losing your 3k is the least of your worries because it will probably set off a bunch of wars. :D

Anyone who wants to invest should look into vanguard index funds. You need 3k minimum to invest but they have extremely steady growth and are not risky like putting all your money into one stock and hoping for a miracle.
I think what I'd like is an online investing class - to start - like something put together by 'motley fool' (sort of easy to understand, and focused on investing).

Good advice. All of mine have done well over time (there was that moment back in the early 2000s though...I cried...but they've come back)

You just TRIGGERED me hardcore. I bought into bitcoin at peak price of 1k a piece like a fool and cut my losses by selling them at 700 when they were dropping fast. never again..

Now, Im going to go cry in the corner and eat my BBQ chicken :(

Probably. By then I had learned to stop looking. Mine are set up to rebalance themselves so I just looked away.

Now I'm in charge of our retirement plan at work so I have to look all the time. I hate that.

I will say, though, my kid's 529 plan has done freaking AWESOME over the past 11 years.

I tried reading up on these because it was something I was interested in a while back. It's like a average 8% annual return or something like that?

Averaged over many years, though. But yeah, while I would have to go look to verify I think all of mine are close to that. I've had some for almost 2 decades now. (not that I have enough saved for retirement by a long shot...many of mine are rollovers that I can't contribute to anymore, but they keep going up thankfully).
