I thought google said they decided to stop expanding upon this at some point?
On Google Fiber? I haven't heard that. I know that they're legendarily picky about what cities they expand into, which is why Los Angeles *wasn't* one of the first cities (they wanted a massive list of requirements met before they would come in). LA is going to be late to the party big time, but they'll still be getting Google Fiber.
Side note - one of the best cities in regards to internet is Chattanooga, TN. They were one of the first to create one of their own local internet services. They also have a $70/month gigabit service. Federal agencies, at the behest of communications companies (Verizon, Spectrum/Charter, Comcast, etc) actually got legislation passed in some areas that bars cities from creating their own services (which makes no sense, but w/e), but some have actually *ignored* that (somehow legally) and created their own.
Again, these are the beginning steps into this next stage of internet. By trying to get rid of net neutrality, Ajit Pai made sure to show just how vital basic internet service is, and how it essentially is a utility. Just like Trump himself, this will actually end up being good overall, despite seeming very bad right now.
