I'm using an online banking card so I guess the security isn't nearly as good. I'm still wondering how they got all the info.

The bought it online or it was skimmed, super easy to do.

Maybe they used a card reader. You need to pursue that, I think.
I use Chase bank and they seem to have excellent security.

PSA: Do not use a debit card to buy shit anymore. Debit cards should be put in the sock drawer and left alone, anything bought should be bought with a credit card (which comes with a bunch of rights). If I need cash Ii'll walk in the bank to a teller and have them give it to me. Had my identity stolen once and it wasn't fun and took a year t o get my credit back to good shape again. If I could find the dirty SOB who stole it, I would probably choke them to death

Very easy to do. I have had a credit card "stolen" through skimmers a few times. One time I got a call from the bank the card is with asking me about some purchases. That were made in person with an actual card in a city hours away from where I was. I had the card in my purse. Apparently, they can "guess" card numbers and try small purchases online until one goes through, then they press an actual card with their name on it and use it in person.

edit: this is part of what the new chips are supposed to thwart.

The banking laws are actually getting a little bit better but very sound advice. CREDIT over debit every time.

They don't guess it, they have it once it's skimmed. Also, the chips do nothing but try to make you feel warm and toasty that they help, they do not. They actually are a bit worse.

I just squiggle on the signature thingy. No one has ever questioned it, and most of the time I'm using fiance's card.

Right, that's true and I worded my post wrong.

The card that was used in person was not used by me at anything that could be skimmed (I had put dental bills on it, that was it). The bank explained in this case they used some fancy computer stuff to guess the card numbers and press them.

I have had other cards stolen through a skimmer. Now, if I'm traveling and need gas, I use prepaid Visa cards in the pumps. Around home I only use my credit card to buy gas from stations I know check for skimmers 3x's per day.

I have "ask for ID" on the back of all of my cards. They can verify my signature on my actual ID.

That only helps if I lose my wallet, though, and the card is stolen that way. Doesn't do shit online.

I always use the credit option instead of debit. Used my debit at some shady liquor store last year and had 300 dollars worth of random charges in Florida a week later.
