How dare that person person have any input on what he wanted his invention to be called!
Lol right? Like someone naming their child Vanyanka @Vanyanka and pronouncing it: Von-yawn-ka ... yet everyone is insistent on calling her Van-yank-uh

Oh no, he can have input. His input just doesn't matter.

It's like if I created a new self-sustaining energy source that went completely contrary to known physics and thermodynamics, and revolutionized the world...and then wanted to call it "farty light." Sorry, but I don't have input there. We're not revolutionizing the universe with farty light, and we're not posting jifs.
G can be pronounced both ways though, so I just don't see the logic in the argument.

No, I'm waiting till we're done with this poll so I know exactly who to exclude from the next forum.

Just because you all mispronounce something the same way doesn't make it correct.
Generally I balk at misspellings becoming the norm just by virtue of everyone being an idiot (ffs it's lose, not loose), but I prefer gif over jif so I overlook this one

On another barely remembered linguistic note, I recall reading that the "u" was added to British English after most of the colonists had left, which is why there's the divide in American English, and American is actually closer to the latin/germanic roots.
Hmm. The british spelling (labour, etc.) is also dominant in many of the English colonies so I wonder about that.
