Actually I'm going to take another shot at this.

Was there only sawed-offs at the shotgun Bris?

That's the thing, Peter Jackson didn't direct this movie. He basically just gave up after the first few months because they wouldn't leave him alone. With LotR he was basically a one man show which is why they rocked.

del Toro is the one that gave up (for that reason). Jackson stayed on and directed all three (he was originally just a producer), but it's quite obvious he was only there in body. Plus, the movies had no pre-production time (LotR had 3 years of preproduction). The studio chose to make Jackson throw out all of de Toro's preproduction work and fly by the seat of his pants.

But i guess we can both agree that basically Jackson didn't direct this movie in any real sense, and the studios ruined it. I still wouldn't choose him to direct a Hobbit movie, because he has a distinct dramatic style present in all his films that doesn't gel well with the Hobbit's tone or structure. I think even Jackson new this and that's why he wanted del Toro to do it.
