I lived in a tiny little town of 1200 for almost a decade. Even Walmart and McDs was an hour drive
(And now the high school where I am has more kids than 1200! )

Man... I remember when our town got McDonald's. We felt like a REAL city (especially after losing Hardees, and only having Subway remaining... but there are Subways EVERYWHERE, so they don't count as anything special).
We also ALMOST got a Wal-Mart, but due to angry, whiny land owners and politicians, they ran Wal-Mart out of town, and they built one literally the next town over. They almost prevented McDonald's from being built, but one guy got really angry at the other land owners and politicians, so he sold the land just to spite them, and so yay, McDonald's.

Small town politics. Good times.
(we also have liquor stores as of 2 years ago, since we are no longer a dry county. That made people angry, too. I think they just like being angry)
