There are videos on youtube where the high or low frequencies are cut out, and the reasons why it sounds different becomes clear. I voted differently in that HIT based on what I heard than what I would have in the original sound.

i've seen some linguists (who do sound stuff) on twitter who analysing the sound waves & apparently the two words are layed on top of each other, apparently which one you hear depends on whether youre more sensitive to the lower or higher frequencies

That's what I saw someone say on reddit, I also saw someone say it depends on age (younger would hear yanny) but my little sister hears laurel and my mom hears yanny (and there's a bit of an age difference there)
