Picking food out of teeth with bone or twigs isn't high tech. Some people around the world still make their own teeth cleaning implements out of frayed branches.

Cavemen teeth weren't perfect. Paleontologists look in tooth plaque to figure out what those people ate. They could have had gum disease that would lead to tooth loss if they lived longer. And they didn't have tons of sugar in their diets. Paging health nerds for more reasons!

Didn't have processed foods and sugars. Ate a lot of raw vegetation that scrubs the teeth.
Even modern man doesn't need toothpaste really, if you have a pretty clean diet and brush with water long enough.
