Oh, re-enlistment bonuses.

My son is Navy. He just got a reenlistment bonus which is normally not offered to people of his rate, but they are having trouble getting people to stay. He was planning on reenlisting in two years anyway, but this was a get it now, because we don't know how long we'll be offering it, type of thing. He had planned on waiting close to his time up before reenlistment because it gives them more bargaining power regarding locations. He took the money, so now, he's at their mercy where he'll go, but he felt he couldn't pass it up. They pay half up front, then the rest over the next four years.
