I starting reading some of the preview on Amazon, I liked it, although I will admit I was not prepared for the amount of goriness, I liked it, it just caught me off guard lol

Everyone go read Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley right now. It's awesome. Also, I kind of hate Catch 22. I understand what the author was trying to do, but I just...don't like it. It's too weird.

Apparently there's a whole series I guess? I only recently found out about the others.

There was a book she wrote with some one(s)? else , Black Trillium or something that was good too. I remember exactly zero about it though, just remembered that I liked it.

just looked it up, that does sound pretty interesting. Another to add to my to-read list. My all-time favorite fantasy/sci-fi will always be Lilith's Brood by Octavia E. Butler. It's so unique and amazingly well-told.

I read The Handmaid's Tale offred (pun!) the weekend. I don't want to tell this story. Abstract, spoiler-free comments...

After series season 2 finished, that was a good point to give the book a try. I understand some of the complaints fans of the book have about the series. Making the book into a multi season series is mind-boggling, so I see why there are some big differences just in the concepts behind each. The series is lurid, and it seems like several of the events in it are there mainly for shock value. The book is depressingly hopeless, and the final chapter is an oh em gee cherry on top. Depressing, but worth reading.

Just finished reading the Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn series. It was pretty good, the ending was kinda cheesy, and it seemed like the author was kind of in a rush to tie up all the loose ends (which probably lent to the cheesiness). Overall it was a pretty good series, though. I'll probably read them again eventually. Now I'm going to give Hawaii by James A. Michener another read, I love it and haven't read it in a few years.

Yeah, but I read that the book is very different from the series in some ways. We'll see!

What I've been reading:

The count of Monte Cristo unabridged: Whenever a "what is your all time favorite book" type thread pops up on reddit this is always near the top so I thought I would give it a try. I liked it for the most part, but I don't think it's the masterpiece people make it out to be. I didn't really get the "clever, plotting mastermind" feeling but more of a "if you luck into a ton of money you can spend it recklessly to get what you want."

The stranger by Albert Camus: Short, and honestly rather dull until the last few pages. Didn't love it.

The curious incident of the Dog in the Night-Time: This book was interesting. Told from the perspective of an autistic child regarding how he sees the world. The story wasn't anything special but I do think the author did a good job writing from the perspective of someone with autism (apparently his son is autistic.) Worthwhile read.

The name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss: Have been wanting to read this one for a while -- and I really enjoyed it. The author is very talented and there are some sparks of brilliance sprinkled throughout the novel. Although it is a fantasy book I don't think the fantasy aspects were overly pervasive.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman: A short, enjoyable read. The writing was creative and the characters were interesting but honestly the story/plot as a whole was rather forgettable.

Also read a few more books in the Dresden Files series, enjoying some more than others -- but all were decent.
