I have a theory that everything will go back to being profitable, but all the new people (except for me!) who joined after the hay-day will be gone b/c of all the doomsday talk.

Yeah, I have a feeling there is a cycle of expansion/contraction on MTurk with regards to both requesters and turkers. The turker population swells when the opportunity to profit is high, data quality degrades and requesters jump ship, turkers out for a quick buck follow suit and after the culling the cycle is repeated.

If Bezos wants mturk to make money, it will. His employees (those that manage mturk) are tracked very carefully though data analytics. If the profits start to turn down, even a tiny bit - they'll know - and find a way to better advertise us to the world.

I assumed you were an OG Mturker. I'm talking about those who joined around and after me (Winter of last year/spring of this year) who are flooding all the forums. I'm banking on those folks dwindling out and getting discouraged lol

EDIT: except for @Kennedy who I think joined mturk around the same time I did.

I'm sure this won't stick with many people, as it's metalcore. But their story is nothing short of inspirational. Their guitarist died of cancer a few years ago at 28 and put out two records and was touring while battling the cancer. The drummer is his brother and is continuing the band in his brothers name. The two songs have been written about the grief and pain of his death and you can just feel the power and emotion of the band coming together for his brother. Knowing the hell they've been going through since his death and still continuing for him is amazing. I know most people wont' like the tune because it's crazy heavy.

The somewhat steep learning curve does weed out a bunch of people. I have my own theory about mturkers (not all but in general...) and besides just being introverted masochists.
