Yeah after doing tests, they found out she had Long QT syndrome. So basically it could happen at any time again in the future. So she's got an ICD (implantable cardioverter-defibrillator) chillin on her heart, so it auto shocks her. It's been almost 10 years now though and hasn't happened again.

The whole thing was totally bizarre. She was at soccer practice at the school. The track field is open to the community. The doctor who saved her life just so happened to be there because his wife walks there, and the friend she usually goes with was sick, so she asked her husband to go. The doctor? He was the one that pushed for defibrillators in the school, which had just been 3 months earlier. There are tons more things that were like WTH how did all of that come together.

When my sister was 13 she had a heart attack and died, but was brought back to life 4 minutes later with a defibrillator.

If she were on mturk, she'd be conflicted at the attention check "have you had a fatal heart attack?"

so i guess their idea is that you have to interpret the word "fatal" in a very strict way, so that answering the question "yes" implies that you are currently dead? thing is that: a) the meanings of words aren't sealed metal boxes, they have fuzzy edges that can change according to the context; and b) asking a yes or no question strongly implies that it's *possible* for either answer to be correct. so someone trying to answer the question cooperatively would have to assume the question has a meaning that makes it possible to be answered yes or no, and in order for you to ask me it i have to be alive right? and in that case i think that it would be perfectly natural to interpret the word "fatal" in an edge-case kind of way, that allows for me to be still alive right now. anyway your sister would be perfectly entitled to answer yes in that case. conclusion: these attention checks are dumb as hell. references: i'm a semanticist

I hate terrible trouble with some of the HITs on mturk, particularly with those that ask "Rate the sentiment " or something similar. I obviously use language very differently to some of the requesters here, and now I avoid those kinds of HITs. I see sarcasm and irony everywhere and like a good Brit, respond positively and enthusiastically to it.
