I grew up with my mum's Christmas trifle. Which had about 3 inches of whipped heavy cream on the top. OMG so good. I was so confused when I was introduced to Cool Whip and the idea of adding sugar to my cream makes me shudder.For years I thought I hated whipped cream, and then I needed to make it by hand and discovered homemade whipped cream is much different than cool whip or the canned stuff.
ETA: She didn't like custard, so the space that would have been filled with extra fruit and loads and loads of cream. I still find trifle with custard a little strange.
