I had someone ask me about the viability of doing Mturk as a full time solo income lately. I only do it part time so I wasn't sure how to answer them well, I would think it "could" be done and I know the mileage varies between individuals based on productivity and time invested. In general, would it be considered to be feasible? I know its a complex question with a number of variables, so I didn't know if anyone had success in doing so.

I think it'd be difficult for someone just starting now. There's not as much work, and experienced workers have advantages. Closed quals and/or masters are very important.

Oh for sure, they more or less expressed interest as a side income for the moment, but questioned whether it could be transitioned to full time somewhere down the road. I've just never done it full time so I did not know how that would pan out.

Totally depends on how much money they need to make from a full time job.
There is no scenario where Mturk can pay me enough to make up for what I make working full time when I take into account the benefits (the big one being my medical premiums). At least, not with the way Mturk is set up right now. Not even at super proficient worker level, the best there is, could I make enough with hits capped at 3800. But work pays my medical, cell, retirement benefits, some bonuses and pays me when I'm sick and on vacation.

However, if you need far less than I do, yeah, it can be a decent full time gig.

I don't have a lot of experience to speak from. I'd be nervous about having all of my income coming in from Mturk even if it was possible to make a consistent weekly wage that took care of all my expenses. I would like to be able to build a completely mobile income stream though so I can do some travelling. Mturk may be a part of that but more likely I'll figure out what that looks like because of my exposure to Mturk.

IMO it should be seen as a last resort option in most cases.... maybe a step ahead of working at Mcdonalds if you are technologically apt.

Also, Mturk "full time" would usually imply more than 40 hours per week to make "full time wages" from a traditional job, if that makes sense?

(does that make sense?)

Yeah I know I couldn't switch over myself either. Between my insurance being covered, annuity contributions, and retirement plan all being on top of normal hourly, I mostly just use it as a side gig for my free time and as supplemental during occasional lay offs. They were more in the 30-35k bracket roundabouts without any real benefits, so I wasn't sure what to tell them. It was mostly just to get a general idea of whether to suggest against it or not.

They should start off part time and see what quals they can build up. If they do well, are willing to put in more than 40 hours per week (because a good chunk of that is seeking work) then I can see that being doable full time with dedication and a work ethic and more than 40 hrs. But it might not be consistent income.

My job also lets me turk if I'm not busy so that is very helpful. At a minimum I can keep things running in the background to try and not miss quals or catch hits with longer timers so I can work on them at home (like last week I did two transcription hits that were $30 per and had 24 hour timers, caught them while at work so that is awesome).

It also lets me post on the forums. Well, maybe not "lets me" it just hasn't said anything to stop me yet, lol. (I run a business with my mother. Who is technically my boss and could stop me from doing this, but...she hasn't so far and I try to not abuse it.)

I did the exact same thing weeks ago and now I'll probably never know. :(

Had to go to four stores to get diet root beer and cough drops.

I totally wish I had just skipped everything and only written today. :(

Thankfully I don't quite need full time wages. Which is good because I can't work a regular schedule for medical reasons.

Also, I'm largely just Turking so far, but I will branch out into some other things (other than Not-so-Prolific) eventually - I think the key to going it on your own is having more than one source of income.
