Also as the follower, if the instructions make zero sense, either you misinterpreted them or the leader messed up. Either way, continuing to try to do it instead of asking for the next instructions just exacerbates the problem. If you seem stuck, PLEASE ask for new commands.

Yup I would only add that often it makes no sense because the "command queue" is backing up for whatever reason. Doesn't matter whose fault it is. You are risking skipping turns but I just found out you can move next through more than one command, so if there's three in the queue the follower can look at them all - it's just that if you hit next after the last one (and you won't know which that is) it ends your turn.
