There have been situations where I've found it to be helpful. You can use an extension like Linkclump to do it, though.

I'm part of the $26 SurveyComet thing and I checked email 13 minutes after it arrived and the actual hit was gone already. I had to write two papers this morning, so that was that. I already missed the one from yesterday because I was at my other son's house for 4 days watching his little ones and was dealing with a 2 year old when it arrived.
