I'm soooo hopeful. I just threw out a futon that Frank visited (well, I'm cutting it up now - it's in the garage in pieces lol.

For those not in the know, VT won't accept it unless I take it to the dump and pay them 22.50. I think I can stuff a small futon into 5 garbage bags - and they only cost 11. So, cheap-o me is going that route

I'm trying to train my dad about emptying the paper shredder using the same type of idea as the litter-robot. I see him emptying the bucket of the shredder into a bag, making a mess of small paper pieces as he dumps it. I'm trying to train him that he should take a plastic grocery bag and use it as a liner for the bucket part and when it comes time to empty the shredder, it's simply pull the liner bag out of the bucket, tie off and throw away in the garbage can and install a new garbage bag liner.

GOOD LUCK! Sounds like it makes sense but when people get used to doing things... I don't like using plastic bags for anything and it sometimes drives my husband insane.

you should have a talk with your local refuse department. Explain to them it might be worth a program like the "large item pickup" here where the refuse dept. will pick up your oversized item (mattress, furniture, appliance, etc) for free. I suppose the program came about because it's better to pick it up for no charge than to have a disposal charge and someone finding it cheaper to dump it in a field than pay a disposal fee.

Have you thought about one futon bag each week in your main trash for 5 weeks so that it might not cost you any additional fee to get rid of?

All trash has to be paid for. We pay $ for the 'special' bags that go to the street. We also pay for the service of picking it up. There is NO large item pick up here in VT (or in NH, I think - or MA?). But VT considers this the 'greenest' of green plans (it encourages us to not produce much trash and when we have large items - to recycle them.

We gave away a rug, recently. But the futon can't go to someone (ick). So........I'm stuck. The dump would cost me 12.50 to dump it. But when we drove there, they said they'd take it....BUT they'd also need a $10 day pass.

That was when I said no way and took it home. It's just a double, and not too big. I'm going to cut it up and stuff it on the curb.
