the "debating" I like the most is "roasting". Jeff Ross has a great 3-4 episode series once a year where people roast each other tournament-style.

Being on the West Coast that’s not a problem for me but it does bug me they start these debates when most folks on the West Coast are just about to leave work.

would you rather have them delay the debates on the west coast for 3 hours? Since it's a debate, it wouldn't matter seeing it a few hours or even a few days later.

The debate was designed to be shown live nationwide in the east coast primetime window with the late news following the debate in the east.

now you've got me curious to look up anchorage and honolulu tv listings to see if it's being shown live there or if those two states are going to delay the debate until primetime there.

EDIT: Honolulu is showing it live (2pm-5pm local), Anchorage is showing it on tape delay in their local primetime.
