not absurd at all. There are probably beach houses, beach hotels, etc. behind the cameraman and if there were a fire, ocean water is likely too full of junk and would ruin the fire engine's pump. This hydrant provides a clean source of water that won't mess up the pumps.

I was a lieutenant on the fire department for 29 years. We'd have to draft to get water from the ocean or a lake. It takes two people five or ten minutes to set up, then another few minutes to get the suction up so we could suck water into the tank on the rig. The whole process can be kinda finicky. With this hydrant, all we have to do is hook up to the hydrant and off we go - takes 45 seconds (that was qualifying time on my dept.). Hydrant is supplied by a pipe that goes out into the ocean (or pond, lake, whatever)

I work on a lake. We have a big PVC pipe on land that runs far out into the lake that the firefighters can hook up to. We are on well water so that cannot be used. It's fun watching them test it and shoot all the water back into the lake.
