I would rather be screened out even if it's unpaid then be rejected. Having to return a HIT after not qualifying in the first minute is definitely not worthy of a bad review!
I don't mind the unpaid screeners if they're just a few questions with basic demos. The 2 I mind are 1) 3 pages of questions and 2) several questions to determine if I qualify for a 25 cent survey.
I appreciate being paid for a screener even if it is only 1 cent. It's respectful of my time.

over the space of 4 days mid last month, I did ~325 total mixed among 3 different batches that kept showing up. all were quick, painless and paid for within 3 days. seeing that particular batch pop in gives me hope that the group is going to run through those various batches again. only time will tell of course
